“Without the NHS I would probably have died when two years old. My GP diagnosed me with epiglottitis (a medical emergency since the swollen epiglottis can prevent oxygen getting to the lungs – now very rare thanks to Hib vaccination) and drove me to the hospital as she said that there wasn’t time to wait for an ambulance. I spent a week in Intensive Care. 32 years on, I am now a doctor.”
